Provisioning. Just one of the terms that we use to refer to buying food and other grocery items for your yacht. We already have a blog on provisioning in general here in Croatia. Things like marina supermarkets and smaller markets versus the bigger (and often less convenient to get to) supermarkets, where to buy foods for specific dietary requirements, etc. Information that applies no matter where in along the Croatian coast you are. This blog is even more specific. This post is for anyone whose charter company is based in Trogir. In this post, you will find helpful hints based on our real life experience to make sure that your boat is stocked well, with items that you and the crew like and with a few Croatian specialties for good measure!
Coffee
Croatia is not short on cafes and Trogir is no exception. And if you’re fussy about your coffee like we are, you might be glad to know that Trogir has three specialty coffee shops:
- Tinel Specialty Coffee in the old town
- Chi Specialty Coffee Shop, also in the old town
- Agape, located over the bridge from the old town.
Tinel and Chi are able to freshly grind beans to suit whatever method of extraction you prefer. The yachts usually have a moka pot (also known as Berlotti or the stovetop espresso) and should definitely have a Turkish coffee pot on-board. And it is always best to confirm this with your charter company before you arrive. If you prefer French Press, Aero Press or any other extraction method, you’ll need to bring your own equipment.
Supermarkets
If your charter is based in ACI Trogir or SCT marina, then the closest bigger supermarket will be Konzum. And beware: This is the closest supermarket to the old town AND the two main marina’s so on Saturdays (charter turn-around day) is gets RIDICULOUSLY BUSY. Which isn’t only a pain in the butt for timing. It also means that they run out of stock on basic things very quickly. Which can be frustrating.
If your charter is based in Marina Baotić, you have a few more options. Within ten minutes walking distance along Ulica Hrvatskih žrtava (the street name), there are four what I would call medium- to small-sized supermarkets: Tommy’s, Studenac, Ultra Ribola and Spiza Market. There are also two pharmacies along this stretch of road, as well as a couple of bakeries. Because of their close proximity to Baotić Marina, these supermarkets also get very busy and also run out of stock very quickly.
Trogir does actually have quite a few larger supermarkets. They are just not as conveniently placed as the ones mentioned above. Plodine is probably the easiest to get to. Located in the Marisa shopping centre about halfway between old town Trogir and Marina Baotić, there are also very handy shops like Muller (which sells coffee pods, beauty products, toiletries, specialty foods, cleaning products, toys, stationary and so much more! Mostly good quality items too), Top Moda (a show shop), as well as Kik and Pepco, cheap shops that sell clothing for all ages and cheap plastic homeware and other items. On the other side of town, between Trogir old town and Split airport, we also have Kaufland and Lidl, our largest supermarkets and the best stocked ones. Up on the main road is also Spot Shopping Centre, with shops like Tommy’s supermarket, another Muller, Intersport, Zoocity and more. You can find a list of the shops at Spot on their website HERE. To get to these supermarkets you will either need to have your own car or get a taxi/transfer to drive you. As is our usual advice when recommending taxi’s and transfers, please always agree in writing on a price for the trip, including waiting time BEFORE you commence the trip.
Local products
Trogir has an amazing fresh fruit and vegetable market. Not only do they sell fruit and veg, you can also buy:
farm fresh eggs
wine and rakija/liker
local olive oil
honeys
cured meats
local cheeses
local preserved items like olives, capers, anchovies, octopus
And so much more!
LOCAL PRO TIP: Do not buy olive oil at the supermarket! Local olive oil is far superior to most of the stuff you get in supermarkets and buying it direct is what we recommend. For those of us who don’t have an olive oil contact, the fresh market is the place to buy it. Anywhere will do. Just make sure it is that lovely luscious dark green.
Craft beer
Croatia has some great craft breweries and, according to people other than me who know what theyre talking about when it comes to beer, has some really great craft beers! They are harder to find out on the islands and can also sometimes be hard to find in regular supermarkets on the mainland. In Trogir, we have an aptly named little shop called The Drink Shop right on the waterfront of the Old Town. They have a great selection of craft beers and are super easy to find. Win/win! If you’re a beer enthusiast, we highly recommend that you stop in and have a chat with the staff.
Wine and Alcohol
When it comes to stocking up on wine and spirits, for your Croatian sailing adventure, you’re in for a treat. Croatia is known for its excellent local wines and during your week you are sure to find some real gems on the islands. And if you’re looking to stock up before you leave the mainland, supermarkets offer a great selection of both local and imported wines at good prices. You can also check out any Diskont stores you might see around. Open longer hours than the supermarkets these stores specialise in discounted alcohol, often featuring a wider variety of options, local and international. Whatever you fancy we’re sure you’ll find plenty of choices to suit your taste.
The Diskont store in Trogir is located about 350m from Trogir bus station in the opposite direction to the old town and fresh markets.
